111: Why Annual Plans Don’t Work – Part 1 – New Year’s Lie

When it comes to the passage of time, the beginnings and endings are all made up. The weekend, the New Year: these things don’t REALLY exist. Human society, however, is hyper annualized. Memberships, resolutions, taxes – almost everything is constructed around a 365-day cycle.

But when we try to plan our lives around a 365-day cycle, it just doesn’t work. So, to start this series on Annual Planning, we’re going to explore why the structure really doesn’t serve us in the planning process.

110: Surrendering to Change – Part 4 – A Meditation

To conclude this series, I want to share an active meditation that is designed to make you more aware of your experience and help you surrender. After the meditation, we will look closely at what that experience reveals about our relationship with addiction, craving, and desire.

109: Surrendering to Change – Part 3 – One Small Change, Big Results

108: Surrendering to Change – Part 2 – Surrendering to the Practice

In the last episode, we discussed the two orientations of change. You can either choose to stay who you are and change your behavior – like eliminating your morning cup of coffee – or you can choose to surrender to the process of changing, allowing it to teach you something about yourself – like discovering the reason you keep telling yourself that you can’t do anything in the morning until you’ve had caffeine.

Today we’re going to go even deeper into that second orientation, which allows us to not just change what we’re doing, but change ourselves and, ultimately, evolve from one stage of engagement to the next.

107: Surrendering to Change – Part 1 – Two Orientations of Change

Today we look at addiction and change through the lens of a morning cup of coffee. We end up identifying with certain habits and routines related to our addictions, incorporating this assumption that it’s part of us. We say things like, “I’m a coffee person.”

And some of us also have this relationship with overwhelm – because, like anything else, being busy can be used like a drug.

So, for part one of our four-part series on Surrendering to Change, we’re going to look at the two primary ways that we can orient towards changing something in our lives.

106: How to Let Reality Win – Part 4 – The Parental Barometer

To wrap up this series on letting reality win, I want to share a tool you can use to develop meaningful metrics for personal progress: The Parental Barometer. If you pay attention, you can learn a LOT about yourself, and what you think about yourself, from a quick conversation with your parents.

105: How to Let Reality Win – Part 3 – Stress is a Thought

In the last episode we discussed how, through our choices, we create our own empowerment – this can be hard to realize, but it’s always true. However, this isn’t easy. It can require tremendous self-management to, in the briefest moment, overcome your negative thoughts and choose to do something, instead of reacting.

To continue our series on letting reality win, we discuss the techniques you can use to slow down and give yourself that opportunity to take control.

104: How to Let Reality Win – Part 2 – One Heroic Choice

For part two of our four-part series on how you can let reality win (and stop getting in the way), we focus on the profound impact of making just ONE heroic choice – a choice in defiance of your shadow – every day.

103: How to Let Reality Win – Part 1 – Interfacing with Progression

There is no perfection in progress, and you’re never going to go anywhere trying to achieve it.

We like to tell ourselves the story that we aren’t doing enough, or haven’t gotten far enough. We like to focus on the one time we fail over the many times we take a small step forward. For some reason, we like to pursue perfection as a goal – and then we give up when we fail, but that’s not being fair to ourselves.

This episode starts a new four-part series on how you can stop getting in the way and just start letting reality win, beginning with your relationship to progression.

102: Self Vs Other – Part 4 – Making the Smaller Self Smaller

In the last episode, we reframed the Self vs Other problem as a conflict between your small self and your Big Self – your ego-driven needs VS your soul-level values. Today, to finish this four-part series, we go over an exercise that will help you self-manage your smaller self, leaving more room for your values.
