“I don’t have time.”
You hear it every day. Maybe you say it yourself. We talk about the scarcity of time as often as we do the weather. You can’t change the weather. But can you get more time with time management skills? Invest a bit more time reading, and you’ll discover that you can….
Of course, we all have exactly twenty-four hours in a day. You can’t change that. That’s why time is far more valuable than money. Time is finite. It’s the most precious resource you have. Everything you do or want to do uses time as a resource.
Time used poorly is the inevitable bottleneck.
For this reason, time management skills are the most fundamental skills there are. They affect absolutely everything you do. This is why we spent so much energy in school learning time management skills.
[record scratch]
Right. I know. I wasn’t taught them either. We didn’t learn much about managing anything in school: money, people, projects, etc. We learned knowledge–most of it irrelevant. We learned about stuff–not skills. Then you grow up and it’s all about management: from your own time and tasks, to raising children, managing vendors, people, accounts, etc. Life skills are management skills.
Imagine how your life would look if you’d graduated high school with expert project, task, and time management skills. You don’t ever feel busy. You never drop balls. You have time for everything you want to do. You don’t need to be reminded of anything. You’re always on time. You’re never overwhelmed. And you get the results you want because you make plans to ensure they happen.
This is not a dream, and it’s not impossible. It’s a reality when you have the time management skills to make it happen. You’ve been out of school for a long time, but it’s never too late to learn. Here’s the first step:
Your Assignment To Improve Your Time Management Skills
Eliminate the phrase “I don’t have time” from your vocabulary along with any other similar expressions: “I’m busy,” “I’ve got a lot on my plate,” etc. It’s a story of powerlessness you’re telling yourself that’s hurting you, not helping you.
There’s an old Scandinavian saying, “There’s no so thing as bad weather, just bad clothing.” That’s responsibility. When you live near the Arctic Circle, nobody wants to hear you complain about the weather. Stop complaining that the Earth is moving too quickly around the sun. There’s no power in that. And every time you catch yourself, ask instead what you can do to develop your time management skills. That’s where your power is. That’s where your dreams are.
Because your dreams are not in the future, really. There is no future. It’s just an idea. There’s only right now. You’re either moving toward your dreams today, or not. The only person who can do something about that is you. And the only time you can do it is now.
